Hoop House/Horticulture Education Coordinator, Part-Time

Major Job Duties 
Maintain Hoop House and Student Garden as an educational resource. Responsible for coordinating with Education staff in the planning and design of exhibits, seasonal displays and daily care and maintenance of plantings in these areas.Assist Manager of Education and Public Programs with development and execution of educational programs utilizing the Hoop House and Student Garden.  Assist with other programs as needed under the direction of the Manager of Education and Public Programs. 

Position Requirements

  • Ability to instruct elementary, middle school, and high school students and guide behavior in a positive, proactive manner
  • Ability to work occasional weekends
  • Work may be performed in a variety of outdoor and indoor environments and weather conditions
  • Requires physical effort including lifting up to 50 pounds and extended periods of standing or walking
  • Pennsylvania driver’s license required
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite
  • Occasional need to help with set-up or tear-down of events
  • Demonstrated basic skills in oral and written communication
  • Demonstrated ability to consistently represent Hershey Gardens and The M.S. Hershey Foundation in a positive, professional manner
  • Demonstrated ability to perform duties professionally under public situations.

Documented training in horticulture, related studies or a minimum of two (2) years of work in horticulture preferred. Continuing education courses in horticulture or a related field helpful.

Two years of experience working in horticulture or related field preferred. Experience in educational programming helpful.

Butterfly Atrium Associate, Part-Time

Works in the Atrium ensuring visitors are having a superior educational experience. This includes engaging in visitor focused informal education, maintaining containment per our containment guidelines, and leading group tours. Assists with receiving of tropical butterfly chrysalids on a weekly basis, including the following tasks:

  • Hanging and labeling each chrysalis in an emergence chamber
  • Recording the condition of each chrysalis and the supplier
  • Recording the emergence or non-emergence of each chrysalis
  • Transferring emerged butterflies from the emergence chamber to the butterfly flight area
  • Properly disposing of any dead specimens
  • Entering all records into butterfly log booklet.
  • Assists with the maintenance of the Butterfly Atrium, making sure that the area is clean and systems are working properly.

Minimum knowledge, skills and abilities required to successfully perform duties/responsibilities:
Requires physical effort including lifting up to 20 pounds and extended periods of standing or walking.
Minimum education and experience requirements:
Associates Degree or higher in education, biology or horticulture preferred. Equivalent experience will be considered.
Experience working in an informal learning environment preferred.
Experience working with living plants and animals preferred.
