Volunteers are a vital part of Hershey Gardens. Whether it’s introducing children to nature through Youth Education Programs, answering questions about butterflies in the Butterfly House or just digging in the dirt to beautify the Gardens, there’s something here for you.

Become a Hershey Gardens “Volunteen”

Calling all teens! Do you enjoy the outdoors and interacting with others? Become a Hershey Gardens Volunteen and assist in planting gardens, caring for birds and butterflies, assisting guests – and much more!

The Volunteen program is every Monday through Thursday from 10 AM to 12:30 PM from Monday, June 24 through Thursday, August 1.

If you are between the ages of 12 and 15 and are interested in spending a fun-filled summer at Hershey Gardens, please complete the “Volunteen Information Form” below and send it to:

Help Hershey Gardens Grow!

Hershey Gardens’ volunteer opportunities offer flexible hours in a fun environment. We are looking for enthusiastic people to assist in special events, Butterfly House, education programs and basic gardening.

Volunteer Opportunities

Butterfly House – “Flight Attendants”

Function: Serve as guides and interact with visitors by answering questions about butterflies, nectar plants and general guidance through the Butterfly House.
Duties and Responsibilities: Knowledge of butterflies and nectar plants (information provided). General knowledge of Hershey Gardens (training provided).
Requirements/Expectations: Attend orientations which are held in May. On the job training is provided. Must be 18 years of age. Standing for an extended period of time is likely. We are looking for friendly and outgoing individuals.
Time Required: Flexible hours, available May through September.

Docents

Function: To assist education staff with hands-on teaching stations during school group visits.
Duties and Responsibilities: Will be working with children of various ages teaching topics such as gardening and butterflies.
Requirements/Expectations: Training and background information provided.
Time Required: Two to four hours per week during school year. Must attend training sessions and complete background clearance checks.

Gardeners

Function: Assist full time gardening staff with garden maintenance including planting, weeding, trimming, of annuals and perennials as well as various other gardening duties.
Requirements/Expectations: Knowledge of gardening is helpful, but not required on the job training will be provided. Must be 18 years of age.
Time Required: Work days are scheduled from March through December. Hours are from 9:30 to noon. See current schedule below.

Special Events Volunteer Opportunities

Function: Assist Hershey Gardens staff during special events.
Duties and Responsibilities: Duties and responsibilities vary per event.
Requirements/Expectations:
Looking for enthusiastic, outgoing individuals, who enjoy working with the public to help with special events at the Gardens. Must be willing to help in all weather conditions.18 years of age or older.
Time Required: Weekends throughout the summer. Hours vary per event.
